What gap in allergic rhinitis care is this new patient portal aiming to address?
Many people with allergic rhinitis manage their condition on their own, but treatment choices are often suboptimal and in some cases even unsafe, such as prolonged use of nasal decongestants. The portal addresses this gap by educating people about the condition itself, its key symptoms and clearly outlining the full range of available treatment options. It also provides balanced, evidence-based information on treatments that are not recommended for allergic rhinitis, including oral and nasal decongestants and corticosteroid injections, helping patients make more informed and safer decisions. It also helps people recognize when self-care is no longer sufficient and when it is appropriate to seek medical advice.
How was the allergic rhinitis patient portal developed, and what ensures the information is reliable?
The patient portal was developed by the EUFOREA team, with all content reviewed by several experts from the EUFOREA Rhinitis Expert Panel. This multi-layer expert review ensures a high standard of accuracy and quality. In addition, specialists were directly involved in recording expert videos that demonstrate diagnostic procedures and videos that explain the respective roles of primary and secondary care physicians in the management of allergic rhinitis.
The portal highlights helping patients prepare for doctor consultations; why is this such an important focus?
Consultation time is often limited, which can make it difficult to address all relevant issues during a single visit. As a result, patients may leave with unanswered questions or think of new ones only after the consultation has ended. By preparing patients in advance, the portal supports more effective consultations. It encourages patients to reflect on their symptoms, medical and family history, and possible comorbidities beforehand. This not only helps prevent important information from being forgotten during a short appointment, but also promotes a more patient focused approach that can make consultations more efficient and meaningful.
How does the portal support patients in understanding their symptoms and using treatments correctly?
The portal offers a comprehensive overview of common symptoms as well as warning signs that suggest further medical evaluation is needed. It includes a practical table to help patients distinguish between viral infections and allergic rhinitis. In addition, it raises awareness of symptoms that may point to associated conditions and clearly advising patients to seek medical care when appropriate in order to obtain a timely and accurate diagnosis. To promote correct and effective use of treatments, the portal offers practical demonstration videos and free patient guides that show how to use common therapies properly, including nasal saline rinses, nasal sprays, and eye drops.
How important is patient education and empowerment in improving outcomes for patients?
Patient education and empowerment are crucial. When patients are well informed, they are better able to advocate for themselves and participate actively in decisions about their care, which can lead to improved outcomes that align with their preferences and values. For example, when patients understand the available treatment options, meaningful shared decision making becomes achievable rather than aspirational. By also highlighting lifestyle and preventive measures, the portal equips patients with practical tools to take a more active role in managing their condition, even outside of direct medical supervision.
