Beyond anticoagulation, interest has grown in therapeutic escalation through systemic thrombolysis, catheter-directed therapies or surgical embolectomy in patients with high- and intermediate risk pulmonary embolism (PE). An ultrasound-assisted thrombolysis system, as well as catheter-based embolectomy and bioconvertible inferior vena cava filter interventional devices have been approved for use in recent years. It is hoped that more information will emerge to support selection of interventions for medium- and high-risk PE patients.
