Welcome to the first edition of US Respiratory & Pulmonary Diseases. This important new journal will bring review articles and
editorials written by thought leaders in respiratory medicine to pulmonologists across the US and around the world. Case reports
will allow readers to explore all areas of respiratory medicine and extend their knowledge and awareness of lung diseases.
Our first edition begins with a report that concerns exciting new technology. Dr Pastis describes a novel steerable thoracostomy tube
that allows the operator to direct the tube to a target area in the pleural space. The tube also permits passage of a bronchoscope,
allowing the operator to visualize the pleural surfaces and other abnormalities.
Editorials in this first edition address recent advances in the management of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and the respiratory care of
obese patients. Readers will appreciate thoughtful reviews addressing endobronchial involvement in sarcoid and noninvasive
measurements of airway inflammation in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Finally, pulmonologists will be intrigued by
an unusual case report of a fungal empyema in a cystic fibrosis patient occurring late after transplantation.
US Respiratory & Pulmonary Diseases would like to hear from any leading authorities who would like to discuss article submissions, and
is also interested in industry-sponsored articles that are balanced and relevant. We are particularly interested in concise reviews on new
treatments, drugs, and technologies, although we also welcome short case series and original research material. Our journal adheres to
the publication guidelines recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and the Good Publication Practice
guidelines. All articles are subjected to a rigorous, double-blind peer review process. The “Instructions for Authors” information is
available for download.
US Respiratory & Pulmonary Diseases would like to thank all expert authors who contributed towards this edition. A special thanks goes
to our Editorial Board for their support and guidance in this new venture. We hope that you enjoy this journal and find plenty of interest
among these timely articles.
